How Instagram follow trackers work

Updated: 26 October 2026

Short answer: A follow tracker reads the public followers and following lists of an account at regular intervals, compares each check with the previous one and reports the differences. It cannot be real time, because Instagram publishes no live feed: it can only notice a change at its next check.

Snapshots and comparison

At each check the tool records who follows the account and who it follows. The difference between two snapshots gives the new follows, the unfollows and the new followers.

Why checks are periodic

Instagram does not announce follows as they happen and limits how fast data can be read. A tool checks every so often, so the time it shows is when it noticed, not the exact second. Snytch checks about every 2 hours on most accounts.

Avoiding false unfollows

Lists can come back incomplete or reordered. A careful tool does not announce a departure on the first absence. Snytch waits for a second pass that confirms it, and ignores a check that looks truncated.

What a tracker cannot know

It cannot see private accounts, cannot say why someone left, cannot show profile visitors and cannot see anything Instagram does not make public.

FAQ

Do follow trackers work in real time?

No. They work by periodic checks.

Why do some trackers ask for my password?

To act as you, which breaks Instagram's rules and puts your account at risk. Snytch does not.

How accurate is the time of an unfollow?

It is the time the change was spotted, within about 2 hours on Snytch.

What is a false unfollow?

A departure reported because a list loaded incompletely. Confirmation on a second pass prevents most of them.
