Accounts that follow you, then unfollow

Updated: 26 October 2026

Short answer: A common growth tactic is to follow a lot of accounts, wait for follow backs, then unfollow. You can spot it by its timing: a new follower who is gone a few days later. Instagram will not show you that, because an unfollow leaves no trace. A tracker records the arrival and the departure, so the pattern becomes visible. It cannot know the intent, only what it saw.

What the pattern looks like

A new account follows you, you follow back or not, and within days it is no longer in your followers. Often the profile follows thousands of accounts while having few followers, posts little and promotes something. None of this is proof on its own.

Why Instagram hides it

The followers list has no dates and a departure simply disappears. Your counter goes up by one, then down by one, and you never learn which name was behind it.

What a tracker adds

Snytch checks a public account about every 2 hours and records each arrival and each confirmed departure, with the time it spotted them. Compare the two times and you see who stayed a day and who stayed a month. It does not label anyone as a bot or a growth hacker: that call stays yours.

FAQ

Should I follow back?

That is your call. Look at the profile first: its posts, its ratio of followers to following and what it promotes.

Can I see who unfollowed me right after following?

Yes, if your account is public: the tracker lists the arrival and the departure with the times it spotted each.

Does Instagram remove these accounts?

Sometimes it removes fake or inactive accounts, which also changes your count. A tracker shows which names left.
