Why did my Instagram followers drop

Updated: October 21, 2026

Short answer: A drop in followers is usually one of four things: people who really unfollowed, accounts that deleted or deactivated themselves, fake or inactive accounts that Instagram removed, or accounts that blocked you. Instagram never says which, so the counter alone cannot tell you. Seeing who left and what happened to their account can.

The four usual causes

Real unfollows are the obvious one. The others are quieter: people delete or deactivate their accounts, Instagram removes fake or inactive accounts from time to time, and some people block you or switch to a private account, which can also take them out of your count.

Why the counter cannot answer

The number only goes down. If it moves from 843 to 842, Instagram does not say who, when, or why. A big overnight drop that is mostly removed accounts feels the same as a wave of unfollows.

How a tracker helps

Snytch keeps the list of followers and rechecks about every 2 hours. When someone disappears it confirms the departure on the next pass, then shows who left and whether their account is still visible on Instagram or has disappeared. That is how you separate a real unfollow from an account that simply no longer exists.

FAQ

Is a sudden drop normal?

It can be. Instagram sometimes removes fake or inactive accounts, and a batch of removals shows up as a drop with no unfollow behind it.

Can I find out who unfollowed me from the drop?

Not from the number. You need a comparison of your followers over time, which is what a tracker keeps.

Will the people who left know I checked?

No. Snytch only reads public information and never notifies anyone.
